RMI Health & Business Issues
Fake toothpaste may contain poison

The Department of Public Health is warning the public of a counterfeit toothpaste that health officials say may contain a poisonous chemical found in antifreeze.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall of the counterfeit Colgate toothpaste labeled as manufactured in South Africa.

One such counterfeit toothpaste was reported by a Tinian resident, according to the DPH Bureau of Environmental Health.

DPH said health inspectors are currently informing wholesalers about the recall and are conducting random inspections on various retail stores in the CNMI.

The recalled toothpaste brands may contain diethylene glycol or DEG, a poisonous chemical found in antifreeze. DEG is a colorless, slightly sweet chemical ... :: Read more

Stars Of Oceania Scholarships Awarded

Students from Marshall Islands and Pohnpei have been named as the first recipients of the Stars of Oceania Scholarship at the University of Hawaii today.

Tamera Heine from the Marshall Islands and Jansen Santos of Pohnpei have each been awarded a $1000 scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year.

"These two students epitomize the potential there is for the university to contribute to the improvement of this region by providing access to a quality, global education for the people of the Pacific Islands," UH President David McClain says.

Heine is a full-time student at UH Manoa where she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in political science. She hopes to return to the Marshall Islands as an educator.

Interior chief affirms ties with Pacific

U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has concluded a two-week tour through the Pacific in the most extensive trip for a cabinet member to remote U.S.-affiliated islands in years. The trip included stops at the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Marshall Islands, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia and American Samoa, as well as Hawaii.

He also visited Midway Atoll for the 65th anniversary of the battle that marked a turning point in World War II. “Those who have a presence in the Pacific will be positioned strategically very well. We don’t want to be absent from that,” he said before returning to Washington. “So it’s important to continue our friendship and assistance to these islands.”

As interior secretary, Kempthorne oversees federal policy in ... :: Read more

Micronesian Games
Micro Games host known by end of 2007

Micronesian Games Council president Bill Keldermans is hoping to name the host country of the 7th Micronesian Games by the end of the year.

Keldermans, in a telephone interview yesterday, said he is waiting for other MGC member island nations to cast their votes of which country to support for the right of hosting the Games in 2010.

“The hosting of the Games has not been awarded because nobody would send me their votes,” Keldermans said.

Those that already voted are the CNMI, Palau, Kiribati, and contenders Yap and the Marshall Islands.

Guam, and the three other states of the Federated States of Micronesia-Chuuk, Kosrae, and Pohnpeii-have not voted yet.

Kosrae, the Marshall Islands, and Yap have submitte ... :: Read more

US drops hammer on nuke-island money dispute

Majuro -- The U.S. government is halting an annual $600,000 payment to nuclear test affected islanders in the Pacific in response to a demand by a traditional leader for more than four times the amount.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior David Cohen told Rongelap Atoll Mayor James Matayoshi in a May 24 letter obtained Friday that Interior will no longer approve the $600,000 annual “tribute” to islanders that has been paid annually since 1998 for use of their land.

A U.S. Congress-provided $45 million resettlement fund has, since 1998, paid for power, water, road, housing and other community infrastructure needed for islanders to resettle their island that was exposed to a snow storm of radioactive fallout from the 1954 Bravo hydrogen bomb test at ... :: Read more

Island states concerned about members

THE Pacific Islands Forum must be deeply concerned when something of such nature happened between two of its members

Island states which joined included Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. New Caledonia and French Polybesia were later granted full membership status.

The Forum was referring to the expulsion of the New Zealand High Commissioner from Fiji yesterday

A spokesperson for the regional body said the relationship between New Zealand and Fiji was an important one for the region and their members. He said the region would inevitably suffer when such events disturbed their relations.

The Forum is commi ... :: Read more

Marshall Islanders question claimed business opportunities
Marshall Islanders question claimed business opportunities in American military relocation

A Bush Administration Cabinet official told business leaders in the Marshall Islands that they should prepare to cash in on the business opportunity offered by the American relocation of 8,000 U.S. Marines from Okinawa to Guam.

But some Marshall Islands business leaders are worried that poor education and limited vocational training programs in this western Pacific nation will undermine the potential opportunity.

Department of Interior Secretary, Dirk Kempthorne, who is visiting the region, told the Marshall Islands Chamber of Commerce in Majuro that the U.S. government expects billions of dollars will be spent on construction and relocation.

Cheap, Reliable and Renewable Electricity a Step Closer for Pacific Islanders

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors today approved US$9.5 million provided by the Global Environment Facility to fund renewable energy electricity supplies for rural communities in the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

In the Pacific Islands, access to electricity can be as low as 7% in rural areas of Papua New Guinea to a high of 65% in Fiji. However, power generation has been heavily dependent on diesel and most lighting is still provided by kerosene lamps. With the cost of diesel and kerosene soaring in the past two years, many rural households have been spending 25% or more of their income on fuel. Schools in Papua New Guinea have been spendin ... :: Read more

Samoa deputy PM pushes Pacific’s reform agenda

Majuro -- In a region struggling variously with civil strife, over-crowding in urban centers that taxes the ability of many governments to provide adequate education and health services, and high-rates of “lifestyle” illnesses, Samoa stands out for its ranking by the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank among the best in the region in economic growth and “good governance” indicators.

Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister Misa Telefoni Retzlaff flew to the Marshall Islands this week to launch the College of the Marshall Islands Public Policy Institute — an initiative of the two-year community college to become “a place where information from the global community will be available to help us solve problems all societies need to solve,” said college President Wilson Hess. ... :: Read more

Shortage of skills in the Pacific islands

This was the resolve of a 15 month study of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the region, recently concluded by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), through the Japan Special Fund, the study reviewed TVET systems in the Cook Islands, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

The study found that the region suffers from a paradox when it comes to technical vocational skills, and while unemployment levels are high, Pacific Island Countries continue to import skilled workers from overseas to fill jobs which Pacific people do not have the skills or experience to perform. ... :: Read more
